In a sudden turn of events, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s cold Western epic The Revenant snatched three awards, including Best Picture – Drama, Best Director and Best Actor – Drama for Leonardo DiCaprio. Kate Winslet in Danny Boyle’s ‘Steve Jobs’

The more surprising film awards happened earlier in the awards night; British film actress Kate Winslet takes Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as Joanna Hoffman in Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs over heavy favorites such as Alicia Vikander and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Just when you thought Jobs’ streak is over, Aaron Sorkin wins Best Screenplay, upsetting both Todd McCarthy and Adam McKay for Spotlight and Big Short. Both films, alongside another awards favorite Carol and Mad Max: Fury Road, went home empty handed. Yikes!

Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s space survival dramedy The Martian takes Best Picture and Best Actor for Matt Damon in the Comedy/Musical, snagging all the momentum from Adam McKay’s The Big Short.

Young stars also dominated the main awards, as Brie Larson and Jennifer Lawrence took home the awards for Best Actress in Drama and Comedy for their performances in Room and Joy.

Of course, the night won’t be complete without honoring some of the film legends we have; Denzel Washington wins the Cecil B. DeMille award for his acting contributions, Sylvester Stallone won Best Supporting Actor for his iconic performance as Rocky Balboa in Creed and film score legend Ennio Morricone wins Best Original Score for his work in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight.
