Over the past few years, it has released numerous boundary-pushing series in the like of the striking Bayan Ko, which casts Rocco Nacino as a well-meaning government official who discovers the hard truth of patriot-work. It received much adoration if only for its boldness in bringing something unprecedented in Philippine television inasmuch as discussing political issues highlighting corruption. Also on its roster is the highly ambitious Katipunan, set on the revolutionary years of Andres Bonifacio and the rest of La Liga Filipina in gaining independence from Spain. Starring Sid Lucero as the founder of Katipunan, this series paved a historical milestone as a commeration of the hero’s 150th birth anniversary.

GMA 7, one of the larger networks in the industry, seems to have found this ‘shift’ in the local scene to be indeed timely, following with its own release of the long-gestating historical series Ilustrado, starring Alden Richards as the Philippine National Hero, Jose Rizal. Unlike Bayan Ko and Katipunan which both aired weekly episodes, Ilustrado is set to change the landscape of Philippine primetime television with its daily programming–a first for GMA News and Public Affairs.

The series goes back to his years as the young idealist Pepe up to his experiences in Europe, all the while grieving for the status of the country and the ‘cancer’ of which he is to discover and write. The romantic in Rizal will also be highlighted as the series explores his relationship with his cousin and first love Leonor Rivera (Kylie Padilla) and his affair with the French woman Nellie Boustead (Solenn Heussaff).
