Kevin Ang’s entry about a disillusioned grandmother (portrayed by Erlinda Villalobos) won all Best Director, Best Screenplay and Audience Choice awards at the recent Cinemalaya Film Festival.
Titled Lola, the film is centred on Villalobos’s character who keeps and feeds her undead family at home, ignorant of the outbreak that had “risen the dead” in Manila.
When asked if he can share a few words about his film, Ang sent me this:
“This film started off as a throw-away idea that kept with me for years. With the help of my producer Adi Bontuyan and several talented people, we managed to make it.
“I intended it to be a genre short, but one that took a popular genre to an unfamiliar setting with unfamiliar situations. It was also meant to be an exercise on pacing- if I could take the audience with no expectation of the film and how can I lead them for 17 minutes.
And I hope it worked. And I hope there will be many more opportunities for me to do it again in the future.”
All seventeen minutes of Lola is available for viewing for free in the video at the top of this post.
