Babyruth Villarama
Award-winning filmmaker Ms. Babyruth Villarama first saw the beauty and the perils of documentary filmmaking with her stint as a researcher and producer in a television show called Pipol. The task to flesh out the brevity of a story from real people, real situations led her to produce and direct some of the best documentary films the Philippines has to offer — from Sunday Beauty Queen, a documentary about the lives of Overseas Filipina Workers in Hong Kong reclaiming their lives by competing in beauty pageants held on their singular days off; to Little Azkals, a documentary on the journey of the twenty-two (22) boys selected by the Philippine Football Federation to train for the coveted 2019 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, and the 2024 Olympics.
Her films encourage audiences to become agents of social change, to see not only the beauty of Filipino friendship across the globe, but also the constraints of what human trafficking, and illegal working conditions can do.
