This week in trailers: the directors of Inside debut their French spin at the backwood-slasher film; the latest from Terrence Malick gets a new Diplo-infused teaser-trailer; and the sequel to Finding Nemo proves to be more a spiritual sequel to Inside Out.
Here are the past week’s trailers of films we think you should look out for.
Finding Dory
O.K., so probably not as explicit about mental health as Inside Out, but it is quite theorized even from the first movie that Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) very well may be stricken with Alzheimer’s, or at least shows signs of the onset of the disease. Finding Dory, then, becomes a portentous title to self-rediscovery. Because sidenote: it has to have that going for it; it looks alarmingly similar to its successor!
Louder Than Bombs
I’ll have to keep this brief otherwise I’ll go on and on and on. Isabelle Huppert in a gorgeous new drama directed by Joachim Trier (2006’s rePrise).
Baskin
IFC Midnight just dropped the official trailer for Baskin, the phantasmagoric horror-thriller from Turkish filmmaker Can Evrenol. It looks promising, the Del Toro-esque goth horror vibe going on. Friends who’ve seen it at TIFF has more praises for it than qualms, should be enough for me to watch it when it comes out March 25th (all major V.O.D.s).
A Beautiful Planet
Jennifer Lawrence narrates what looks to be an inspirational IMAX documentary about the earth from astronauts’ vantage points. It sounds problematic in the way that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is problematic when it did what it did to the Merc with the Mouth? J-Law’s got a nice distinct voice, though.
Nina
Speaking of problematic: here’s Zoe Saldana in the role of 50’s Jazz singer Nina Simone, whose career is essentially about getting deserved recognition despite of her black skin. Nina looks like common biopic fare. It looks fine, and it could work well based on the timeliness of the material alone.
The Black Coat’s Daughter
Oz Perkins’ lethargic chiller The Black Coat’s Daughter forefronts Kiernan Shipka (of “Mad Men” fame) as a student in an elite all-girls school who gets entangled in a string of sinister events. Like in his father’s most famous film Psycho, there’s enough use of cutlery here to make spines break. Easily one of my few anticipated horror films this year. Check out the trailer:
Knight of Cups
New teaser for Terrence Malick’s latest Knight of Cups unfolding to the hypnotic riddims of Diplo. Much new footage are debuted hereㅡby “footage” I mean from a hairline to a half a second of moving images.
Among the Living
That the films of Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury are “great”, to me, has always sounded like a mere supposition, an impulse judgment by people who have skipped breakfast. I’ve seen enough of Inside to know their films are well informed, and enough of Leatherface to immediately doubt myself. Regardless, Among the Living looks gorgeous, and at the very least interesting (French backwoods-slasher, hello!).
