Ten films and shows on Netflix that are worth your time

Admit it. You’ve googled this before. Terms like “What to watch on Netflix?” or, “Best romantic comedies on Netflix”, “Horror movies netflix”.

Well, worry no more. As an expert procrastinator and couch potato lady, I’ve done all that and for the past years (as well as recent ones), here are ten films and shows on Netflix that you might want to catch yourself.

Isn’t It Romantic

Why: Because it’s funny, and it’s meta.

Starring Rebel Wilson, Liam Hemsworth, Priyanka Chopra, Adam DeVine and Betty Gilpin. Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, the film follows a young woman who enters a world where meet-cutes are a thing and being happy and giddy is just around the corner, right after getting hit in the head. Come on, relax a little bit and enjoy this satire.

Love

Why: Because Gillian Jacobs is the woman we should all be aiming to be.

I’m going to be a little bit biased here. I have been in love with this series since early 2018. This is probably the most tightly-knit three-series show I’ve ever seen in my entire life. There’s a certain comfort to it that ensures that Paul Rust and Leslie Arfin’s writing makes you feel like you’re a part of Mickey and Gus’ friends, without being too F.R.I.E.N.D.Sy. Their problems here are real, and you’ll want to hug your best friend who’s going through an SLAA episode herself/himself.

Four Sisters and a Wedding

Why: Because Bobbie is they real Queen.

I’m sorry to be using a meme as the official photo representative for this, but Bobbie (played by Bea Alonzo) is the real deal in Cathy Garcia- Molina’s family dramedy that launched a thousand memes. Of course everyone felt that another Independence Day was announced when that blogger… I mean that cast member got dragged out of the bar. Four Sisters and a Wedding is one of the best films to have been included among the roster of Filipino films to catch on Netflix.

Kingdom

Why: Politics + Zombies are so relevant nowadays 😛

Even my four-year old nephew loves this (under careful supervision, of course). Kingdom is South Korea’s answer to Game of Thrones — and on an entirely alternate dimension of course. Kdrama fans and even cult fiction fans will find themselves engrossed in this series written by Kim Eun Hee, which is also adapted from the webcomic series The Kingdom of Gods. But believe me, you can put this and GoT side by side and there’s no competition.

The Spectacular Now

Why: Who’d have thought that Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley would look so cute together?

Back when ‘Divergent’ was a thing, everyone was surprised to find Tris and Peter in this coming-of-age film because of course, if you’ve seen Divergent, you wouldn’t want these two in the same room. But as these are two talented actors, they managed to incorporate their personas as complete opposites in this film written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (the two are responsible for the [500] Days of Summer), basing it on the 2008 novel of the same name.

It contains “icarriin” which acts as PDE-5 inhibitor, and increase nitric oxide level resulting in generic viagra sale erections. Please keep your alcohol intake in charge to enjoy the benefits of it. cialis uk All you do is watch for emails that slip levitra free samples cialis without prescription article through. It enhances the overall episode along with your online class you’ll also get to see cialis 10mg specific videos for self help so that you’ll practise them on your own. Coffee Prince (The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince)

Why: Because we all fell in love with Gong Yoo here, before everyone else fell in love with him in Goblin. And also because this is one of the OG K-dramas out there.

Ah yes. This show, about an irresponsible bachelor meeting his junior and hiring him for his family’s dying Coffee business, was the same show that initially launched a thousand sighs for Gong Yoo. The same goes for Yoon Eun-Hye, whose portrayal as a hardworking, middle-class woman, who needed to pretend to be a guy so she can work for the coffee shop, is and will forever be unmatched. The soundtrack is so cute, it’s available on Spotify here.

Ang Tanging Ina (My Only Mother)

Why: This is the true testament of Ai-Ai delas Alas’ comedic prowess

My Only Mother. What a statement. First of all, I would like to commend Netflix Philippines’ transcriber for his/her wit. I could never have imagined a better English title than that. The film follows a single mother who strives to raise twelve of her children, and in the manner of a great Filipino comedy, combines her hardships into antics that has made this a classic comedy that cannot be replicated. Not even by the next two sequels.

Chef’s Table: Volume 6

Why: A personal favorite, hee hee.

I’m a foodie by heart, and I’m sure everyone else is. The food depicted on this show will make you devour whatever you’re eating right now. And there’s nothing like the way each episode is orchestrated. Each chef is inspiring as the passion and love that they seem to exude in each plate.

Also, please watch this trailer for Volume 6:

Russian Doll

Why: I’m sure everyone has told you why.

This is just a reminder for you to start watching this series featuring Emmy-award winning Natasha Lyonne. But I won’t tell you what it’s about. You just have to figure it out yourself because it’s THAT good not to spoil it.

American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace

Why: Because this is a reminder for you to be kind to everyone.

The story of how the Versace founder was abruptly killed in the 90s was a huge news, that to this day you can actually feel the loss his sister may have had. I have no words for Ryan Murphy, except maybe a little more respect as he and his team continues to deliver with quality production design and storytelling. This show provides a chilling account of the days from when Versace’s killer met him, until the days that led to his own demise. I encourage you to watch this with a friend, because each episode is heavy.

You can find all these titles on Netflix Philippines.
