Eighty entries. Twenty finalists. One showcase of maturing creativity. Piling Obrang Vidyo 11 recognized three outstanding student short films in their respective categories: documentary, experimental and narrative. Coming from nearby provinces and beyond the island boundaries, filmmakers and their support groups trooped to the Cine Adarna, University of the Philippines Film Institute on January 24, 2014 to experience diverse cinema from the lenses of the young breed.
The program began after lunch and ended way past conventional dinner time due to almost five hours of total running time for a score of packed short films. This, however, did not bother the constantly munching, occasionally giggling, and tensely watching audience of students, filmmakers, enthusiasts and even famed members of the Philippine film industry. Once the screenings have finished, the league of the future of local cinema must put up with the agony of waiting as deliberations went on. Keeping out the tense atmosphere were the hosts and sponsors’ entertainment showcase that got some of the audience to their feet and to their thumbs to search for answers to win nifty prizes.
It was half past seven in the evening when the acclaimed writer of Himala, Ricky Lee presented the awards for the narrative category, alongside multi-awarded film editor Benjamin Tolentino, and Richard Somes, director of one of the scariest Filipino horror pics of recent times, Yanggaw. In judging the ten narrative shorts, they are joined by other talented and award-winning film specialists: sound designer of Kinatay, Teresa Barrozo; the very able director of On The Job and The Aswang Chronicles anthology Erik Matti; sound engineer of Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan, Mikko Quizon; director Dan Villegas of Mayohan and English Only, Please; and the premiere thespian Nora Aunor. Esteemed film critic and director of Violator, dubbed the best film of the 10th Cinema One Originals, Eduardo Dayao presented the award for Best Experimental Short Film. Pioneer of Philippine animation Rox Lee and experimental auteur Raya Martin also share the joy in selecting from these five experimental shorts. Of the documentaries shown, the task of citing the best among the five belong to veteran documentary makers Ditsi Carolino, Jewel Maranan and Keith Sicat.
Presented by UP Cinema in partnership with the UP Film Institute, HID Burgers, Smart Mobile Internet and Air Asia; together with official media partners, ClickTheCity.com, WhenInManila.com, and Wazzup Pilipinas, the inter-collegiate video competition grows steadily in quality, quantity and variety of the student films it has screened yearly. The different categories and genres surely rewarded everyone a fulfilling afternoon and at least a nudge in perspective as we tread back to our daily lives.
