Fresh from its win at last year’s QCinema International Film Festival, Cleaners is set to be shown on March at two campuses of the University of the Philippines.
The debut film from director Glenn Barit, who has been known in the local film scene for making cinematic works that play with form (examples of which are Cinemalaya 2017 NETPAC Jury Prize winner Aliens Ata and Cinemalaya 2018 finalist Nangungupahan), has won three awards from the said film festival’s Asian Next Wave competition: Best Screenplay, Audience Choice Award and Best Film.
The film is presented in four vignettes, each of which tackling the life of students from a high school cleaners group sometime in 2007 as they get caught in the many pitfalls of adolescence, from peer pressure to small-scale corruption to making an embarrassment of oneself. The film captured the attention of the jury and other moviegoers who have seen the film primarily because of its distinct visual style, made by printing every frame shot for the film, photocopying each frame, coloring the photocopied frames with highlighters, scanning the highlighted photocopies and stitching each frame altogether.
The film was also featured on Pinoy Rebyu as one of the best Filipino films of the year and for having the best scene of the year, with Glenn Barit recognized for being the director of the year and the film’s editors Che Tagyamon and Noah Loyola getting a distinction for best editing.
The Diliman and the Los Baños campuses of the University of the Philippines will be holding limited screenings of the film. The Diliman campus will be screening the film on March 13 at the UPFI Cine Adarna, while the Los Baños campus will be having a two-day screening of the film along with Tagyamon’s short film Judy Free on March 18 and 19 at the NCAS Auditorium.
