Mobile filmmaking is on a slow, assured rise: Sean S. Baker’s transgender drama Tangerine—shot entirely on iPhone—is currently making waves in the film festival circuit. Television’s “Modern Family”, on a thirty-minute episode called “Lost Connection”, utilized the iPhone’s industry-standard camera to tell the story of the Dunphys. Carly Rae Jepsen’s music video for “Run Away With Me”—a song that at one point since its release has been on-repeat on your phone; be real, I know I have!—is shot using the same device.
It is then no surprise that Power Mac Center is making an effort to endorse the unorthodox, cost-effective alternative to traditional filmmaking. The premier Apple partner launches Cinemansanas, a digital film competition open to both students and professionals. The Student Category is open to all officially enrolled High School and College/University students while the Professional Category is for local residents.
A sophomore edition to Power Mac Center’s Pixelworx campaign, Cinemansanas “dares artists to defy convention and create a short film using Apple devices. The digital short competition calls for short film entries with the theme “Designing for a Bold New World.” Entries may be executed in any form, i.e., documentary, narrative fiction, and the like as long as they are original and shot and edited using Apple devices.”
Filmmakers from both the Student and Professional categories can win anywhere from 30,000 to 50,000 pesos. Power Mac Center gift cards and other special prizes await winners of the Adobo Design Award for Digital Short (Student and Professional categories) and the People’s Choice Award.
Interested filmmakers may submit their films until March 20, 2016. For the registration form and full contest mechanics, visit Power Mac Center’s website.
As in the previous year, Pixelworx Cinemansanas will feature a series of workshops led by brand ambassadors, as well as live demo sessions in select Power Mac Center stores. This year’s workshops will be led by some of the country’s key figures in the film industry:
