It’s a match between survival films at The 88th Oscars, with The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road garnering the most number of nominations. The announcement was made Thursday morning (Thursday night, Philippine time) at California by directors Ang Lee and Guillermo del Toro, actor John Kransinski, and AMPAS president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
The Revenant leads with twelve nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director for Alejandro González Iñárritu, who won this award for Birdman at last year’s ceremony, and acting recognition for Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy. (Unfortunately, no, the bear didn’t get nominated.) Mad Max: Fury Road follows with ten nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for 70-year-old veteran George Miller, who revived this post-apocalyptic franchise thirty years after its last installment. The other films that received multiple nominations are The Martian, with seven nominations, and Bridge of Spies, Carol, and Spotlight, with six nominations each.
The mega blockbuster that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens collected five nominations, mostly for technical categories and expectedly for the John Williams score, but was completely shut out of the Best Picture race. So were Carol and Straight Outta Compton, despite the favorable response of critics toward these films.
The nominations offered a few surprises by favoring Room director Lenny Abrahamson over Ridley Scott for the crowd-favorite The Martian. The Academy did not recognize Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay for Steve Jobs as well as Quentin Tarantino’s writing and directing job for The Hateful Eight. Surprisingly, When Marnie Was There earned a nod for Best Animated Feature, which would surely delight the fans of Studio Ghibli.
The 88th Oscars will be broadcast live worldwide on February 28 (morning February 29, Philippine time) and will be hosted by Chris Rock. The comedian previously hosted the show back in 2005.
