With an ominously turbulent orchestration and apropriately brassy, soulful vibe, Adele’s Oscar-winning Skyfall proves a righteous victor. “This is the end,” she warns. “Hold your breath and count to ten.”

It is then a sensible and conscious decision on the part of the makers to rehire talent. But, as an anonymous MGM employee tips out, Adele has already declined singing the theme for the upcoming, yet-to-be titled 24th Bond film. The same source is telling (via The Sun, cited at NME) that fellow British pop/soul singer Sam Smith is in negotiations to do the theme. “Sam is our top choice. He has the profile, cool image, and an astonishing voice to record a Bond theme,” says the source.

Smith is well-known for his terrific debut: the collaborative synth-pop hit titled Latch (read our track review here), an infectious piece he did with duo Disclosure. Since then Smith has set out to create his own record with his full-length debut In the Lonely Hour which showcased more of his grand, sugary vocal-work.

If ever, Smith is going to be the first solo male artist to do a James Bond theme since Tom Jones did Thunderball. He is also the first openly gay artist to do it, which is always a welcome ‘first.’

  1. There’s nothing cinematic about Sam Smith’s vocals. Lana Del Rey should do it, given that she’s already proven herself in Maleficent and The Great Gatsby.

  2. So far no concrete news on Del Ray for the theme song, but I agree that that Maleficent theme goes deep under the skin.
