After 35 years, Mike de Leon’s revered classic, Kakabakaba Ka Ba?, gets its well-deserved restoration with the help of ABS-CBN Film Restoration and the digitally re-mastery of L’Immagine Ritrovata.
Leo Katigbak, head of the ABS-CBN Film Restoration and Archives (and who we can now officially call “The Father of Filipino Film Restoration“), and Manet Dayrit of Central Digital Lab Inc. spoke of having the film restored during a press con held last August. (They surely had us all up on our toes with the endless list of restored films that premiered this year.)
Making this event ultimately more special is that the film was restored overseas with the help of one of the world’s highly-regarded film restoration laboratories, L’Immagine Ritrovata, under the careful supervision of Davide Pozzi, its current director.

Directed by Mike de Leon, co-written with Clodualdo ‘Doy’ del Mundo and Raquel Villavicencio, Kakabakaba Ka Ba? is a satirical comedy-musical featuring the stellar performances of Charo Santos, Jay Ilagan, Christopher de Leon and Sandy Andolong. The film focuses on these actors as they, respectively, play two couples embroiled in the conflict of two foreign syndicates – from Japan and China – who plan on controlling the Philippine economy. The villains, on the other hand, are played by the late-Johnny Delgado and Buboy Garovillo of the APO Hiking Society.
Earlier this week, Cinema One head Ronald Arguelles posted a photo on his Facebook account which featured one of the film’s memorable scenes (honestly one of my favorites in the whole of Philippine Cinema) where the late Johnny Delgado unleashes his singing and dancing prowess:
