My Bebe Love #KiligPaMore

Perhaps the best way to sit through Jose Javier Reyes’ My Bebe Love #Kiligpamore is putting down your cynical glasses and throwing your entire expectations out of the window. But a bitter taste is stronger than its tolerable bland-ness, and there is no turning back because, you know, the ticket is questionably expensive.

Originally titled Romcomin Mo Ako, the film is supposed to feature Vic Sotto and AiAi De las Alas as the only leads. But the sudden advent of AlDub becomes a game changer to its developments, so instead we got this. Sotto and De las Alas als are tough business competitors: one is a suave, obnoxious, almost expressionless byudo; the other, a loud-mouthed and ill-tempered spinster

Meanwhile, Vito’s daughter Ana (Maine Mendoza) meets and falls in love with Corazon’s nephew Dondi (Alden Richards) and, well, you know what happens next: older folks disapprove, younger folks are stubborn enough to pursue their clandestine romance; former enemies turned lovers, and younger folks disapprove with their old folks’ romance. Sounds extremely familiar, right?

Experiencing My Bebe Love can be compared to a dull love life. The humor feels so dated, like something you have seen from 80s sitcoms over and over again, and De las Alas’ Corazon screams and whines every 2 minutes that her first shouting calisthenics with Sotto almost ruined my entire hearing system. It also serves as a grocery shopping check-list, as it blatantly slaps you with product endorsements, instead of showing some character arc and depth.

My Bebe Love feels comfortable on its place in the country’s most popular film festival; it’s lightweight and dumb fun, but how many antics can it provide to sustain its viewer’s interest for almost two hours? Simple, hammer down the most popular TV couple in recent years and re-hash everything they had done. And with that case, I give credit to AlDub for trying to salvage this, though sadly it isn’t enough. Richards exudes charm and Mendoza is a doll on-screen, but their strength is no David to the terrible material’s Goliath. Everything feels hokey, and their effortless chemistry that is evident in small screen quickly turns into smoke. It’s as if the movie is more interested in selling their sponsors’ products than selling the phenomenal love team on big screen.MOVIE REVIEW: My Bebe Love #KiligPaMore (2015)

Amidst the horrors, there are a handful of silver linings in My Bebe Love that I can commend; Rolando Inocencio and Lilia Cuntapay steals the entire film, and their scenes are the only things that I can associate with the word funny, and while they are playing the roles they have immortalized a thousand times before, Sotto and De las Alas have unique chemistry. Their scenes together provided the kilig in #Kiligpamore, assuring the audience the audacity and authenticity of their pairing. Even some of the scenes that pay homage to popular romantic comedies (That Thing Called Tadhana and One More Chance) work because of their charismatic turns.

My Bebe Love is contented on what it wants to achieve and it barely tries to broaden its horizons. Like most MMFF entries, it’s family friendly and harmless. But harmlessness can be harmful to both audience and filmmakers as it boxes people’s imagination and their instances to be critical on what’s really good or not. I guess the demand for better movies flooding our shores in the holidays are high nowadays; we want it served in a silver platter, not in a paper plate.
