Listen to Miley Cyrus’ equal-rights anthem for ‘Freeheld’

It’s been a while since we’ve heard Miley Cyrus sing for a film’s soundtrack since her previous stint as a Disney superstar. These days the singer has been an avid supporter of any lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) rights ever since leaving her Disney-fied image in the past. This year Miley opened The Happy Hippie Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports homeless and LGBT youth which makes it all the more wonderful now that that emotionally-charged theme song playing all over Freeheld‘s trailer is actually a track Cyrus recorded specifically for the film. The song entitled “Hands of Love” was released in full a couple of hours ago, which I find is a bit of a delayed marketing campaign for the film (hopefully not). Freeheld opened to US audiences starting October 2nd.

Directed by Peter Sollett, Freeheld is based on a 2007 documentary of the same name by Cynthia Wade about a policewoman and her girlfriend (played by Julianne Moore and Ellen Page in her first “gay” role since coming out early February of last year) who fought against Freeholders in the state of New Jersey for domestic-partner rights. The film’s appeal is timely with the recent success of same-sex marriage being granted in the US. To carry on with the film’s message, Miss Cyrus collaborates with 4 Non Blondes singer-songwriter Linda Perry who composes the lyrics and music for the film’s anthem.

Perry spoke to Time ‘s Nolan Feeney about how she came to write the song instantly after watching it. She says she was normally reluctant to write songs for movies, fearing that feedback coming from studio executives might be too much to handle. But alas! Watching the film changed her mind and she wrote the lyrics in her car without any sort of accompaniment.

“The arrangement is there, the lyrics are showing up, I can’t get to a piano, there’s no instruments, there’s no nothing—it’s all just floating around inside my head.”

Ellen Page suggested Perry to let Miley Cyrus provide the vocals for the song. The result is a change of pace from what Miley usually records these days. Her vocals for the song is completely different from her “stoner-pop” melodious anthems these days, the ones you’d be hearing on the audio below is bolder, capped with thoughtful lyrics that seems to soar higher as Miley’s vocals are husky yet tender at times. Oftentimes it leaves you with a little impression of Annie Lennox’s vocals these days — though Miss Cyrus doesn’t disappoint as she owns this song, along with our hearts perhaps.

“Life may have obstacles, but love overcomes all.”
