Dash Shaw’s graphic novel Doctors can be described, in a gist, as a story of the dead being haunted by the living. The story follows “a doctor and his team who can go into a dead person’s consciousness in the form of a memory and temporarily bring them back to life.” It’s an interesting concept—stories with any tinge of supernaturality to them are often the other way around—which is perhaps the reason why Fox has enlisted Another Earth-director Mike Cahill to take on the project, with David Goyer producing.
Let that sink in for a moment: Cahill is directing a film about parascience. Hot damn, my gut is filled with butterflies.
Plus, there’s plenty to work with here: Shaw’s original story is pregnant with idiosyncracies that magnify its dangerously vague yet specific ideas. At this point, I’m pretty much sold and will basically tail the film’s development like mad.
One thing I want to know, though: is Brit Marling going to be anywhere near this project? Because if she is, my body will just drop. As you all can tell, I’m already hyperventilating without any help. So, let me close it with two trailers for Cahill’s previous films.
