Creed—the most recent in the iconic Sylvester Stallone-starring Rocky film series—casts a tiger-eyed Michael B. Jordan as boxing newcomer Adonis Johnson.

Jordan’s Adonis (a pun I imagine that the ladies will overuse pret-ty soon) is torn inside: he lives in the shadow of his father’s legacy whom he didn’t get the chance to know. It sounds straightforward, which affords director Ryan Coogler a great canvas to work on, make out of it a richly textured story as he did in Fruitvale Station.

Both Jordan and Coogler has some things to say about the character of Adonis:

“Mike and I talked about the anger inside of Adonis that he can’t really verbalize but that he gets out when he pushes himself to the brink physically,” Coogler adds. “And people are inclined to do things they have success at, and he’s incredibly gifted at boxing. Whether he knows it or not, he’s trying to connect with his father, and that’s when he feels the closest to him.”
