Magnum Muslim .357

MM .357 movie posterClocking in less than two and a half hours, Magnum Muslim .357 displays a principled hero saving a damsel-in-distress from a villain working in the shadows. One of the seven basic plots in the world could work had there been a compelling script, convincing acting, focused cinematography, and a consistent atmosphere of either all-out camp or sincere gravity. But with a full-length feature, it brought none of these.

There are a few merits though particularly with Ameerah, aesthetically fitted in Sam Pinto with vibrant dresses and detailed make-up. Midway, she looks majestic from a delicately shot Singkil shot. Though it may have been a little overused, it still is a beautiful sight to behold. As a saving grace from the hero, Magnum, acted by Jeorge Estregan with mediocre machismo and a laughable facial hair, much of the suspense and film aura is brought in by the villain, whose name will remain unmentioned to not spoil your movie experience. This villain somehow was a hero all along in the lead actors’ department.

The movie’s disappointment lies in its ineffective translation from from concept to execution. The main storyline of Magnum, an undercover cop, prides upon his honor and religion. It needs more than laying it out verbally or presenting widely-known snippets of Muslim habits. If not extensive, it could be more immersive with multi-angled shots or better words to enunciate, together with effective delivery. Though it all picks up midway, when the sociopolitical realism shakes what is ought to be a typical boy-saves-girl film, it all loses its touch as it meanders between camp and a James Bond or an FPJ action film. Even in the choreographed action scenes, there is not one chosen style to stick to, bringing in laughs from the audience when there should not be. This lack of focus resonates in the clunky transitions and general cinematography, albeit some establishing shots look good. Breathing in new dimensions, the peripheral storylines of a kid being dragged into this brouhaha, a Romeo and Juliet love story, and a sidekick are well-established, but they either progress and die down or remain stagnant.

Despite the mediocre to below-average outcome with a handful of upshots, Magnum Muslim .357 is an action film that gave its own shot.
