Leave it to George Miller to amp up the action and insanity (no pun intended) for the fourth installment of his high octane franchise. Mad Max: Fury Road does not disappoint.
Coming in second to Pitch Perfect 2, this action film raked in $109 million on its opening worldwide. With all the recognition it is getting as of late, it is bound to gather more moviegoers and action fans. No surprise if it ends up on the top 10 blockbuster summer films of 2015.
The first Mad Max movie was released in 1979. Two succeeding films were released respectively in 1981 and 1985, all of which starred Mel Gibson. Since its initial exposure to the public, it has gained quite a following and became a multimedia franchise that includes comic books, video games, action figures and novels.
Not to mention, the interactive entertainment company Kabam is also in talks of developing a mobile game that is soon to be released. Warner Bros. holds the licensing and trademark property of the film while MGM has the distribution rights to the original film.

It has been 30 years ago since George Miller made the third movie Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. This follow-up features a pair of prominent Hollywood names: Tom Hardy who plays Max and Charlize Theron who takes on the role of Imperator Furiosa. The 68th Cannes Film Festival featured an out-of-competition screening the day before the film’s worldwide release.

For those unaware, the Mad Max series is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a cult takes power of its population. Its absurd-looking inhabitants make viewers squirm in disgust: the hairstyles, costumes and prosthetic materials are quite the sight.

In Fury Road, we see a fortress ran by a self-appointed demigod named Immortan Joe (played by Hugh Keays-Byrne) where he basically rules in the most horrible of ways: he takes organs from people and he gets milk from a group of the healthiest of lactating women. He has assigned Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) to drive a War Rig across the desert and collect gasoline from the land’s east end. As she goes off-route, Joe is alerted that she plans to liberate his Five Wives, namely The Splendid Angharad (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), Toast The Knowing (Zoe Kravitz), Capable (Riley Keough), The Dag (Abbey Lee) and Cheedo The Fragile (Courtney Eaton). He then sets his army off in pursuit. Caught up in the ferocious chase is Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), a loner captured by Joe’s War Boys who acts as a living blood donor to one of Joe’s members, Nux (Nicholas Hoult). Max ultimately serves as the film’s reluctant hero as he meets Furiosa and takes over the wheel in defense of Joe’s army.

The action in this movie is undeniably ridiculous and masterful at the same time. Scene after scene offers nothing short of an immersive cinematic experience. While most opt for a slick 3D viewing, this film’s magic to transport viewers to another world will not necessarily rely on that. There is also a staggering amount of digital trickery because the absence of CGI is apparent.
Overall, Mad Max: Fury Road delivers beyond what is expected. It doesn’t feel too long of a movie because there is a balance between the action and the story. As mentioned, the original director, George Miller is still strong and talented of a filmmaker as he was three decades ago and Fury Road is the exact representation of that.
