Warning: Some spoilers and speculation, based on what I know about this film and what rumors I’ve heard, ahead.
Entertainment Weekly has just released new stills from Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The images feature some of the interactions between the DC trinity – Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman – and also give us a new look at Lex Luthor (who, judging by his get up, is apparently part of a grunge cover band in this universe).
Being fronted as a highlight of the movie is the stand-off between the two heroes. Batman in his best attire, standing rain-drenched on a rooftop, staring down his opponent presumably dead straight in the eye, with Peter Gabriel playing in the background (Ok, maybe not the last part) – the still has all the components to make this scene an iconic one. Rumor has it that this will be from the first confrontation between the titular characters as Batman will be seeking to hold Metropolis’ favorite son accountable for the devastation reeling from the events of Man of Steel.
It’s undeniable that Zack Snyder is taking notes from the Frank Miller classic The Dark Knight Returns, decking out a weary battle-hardened Batman in a strength-enhancing mech suit complete with Kryptonite to take down Superman. It’s most likely though that the battle between the two will extend beyond the physical as Batman will probably seek to send a message that everyone must be held accountable, that even gods can be made to bleed.
Taking some cues from the DC Animated Universe, It also looks like both Batman and Wonder Woman will be interacting outside of their costumes. If anyone has seen the Justice League animated series, the pair was portrayed as being very close bordering on romantic. Plus, judging Bruce’s “I wanna smell your hair” stare, it’s very possible that there’s a romance brewing in this cinematic universe. That or this is just a diplomatic gala that happens to have both Batman and Wonder Woman’s civilian identities in attendance, that’s if again Wonder Woman does have a civilian identity or is at least undercover in the movie.

Keeping up with the tradition set by his predecessors, Gene Hackman and Kevin Spacey, Jesse Eisenberg’s Luthor will be sporting hair at some point in the movie. Which route will it take? That we don’t know of. Even in the comics, there have been multiple storylines behind Lex Luthor’s follicle failure. Explanations have ranged from him losing his ginger locks in an accident involving Superman to simple male pattern baldness. It also possible that like the Hackman and Spacey iterations, Eisenberg’s Luthor is just very insecure and feels the need to conceal his lack of hair. Who knows, maybe his head gets shaved when he goes to prison (which seems to be the case based on the previously released image below).
As reported before, Luthor will be playing an integral role as being one of the proponents of the anti-Superman movement. Interestingly, his message of distrust will mirror that of fans’ concern on the level of destruction and disregard Superman exhibited during the battle of Metropolis in Man of Steel. It’s not hard to see how his voice of dissent will echo, planting the seeds of mistrust in the fictional citizens of the DC Cinematic Universe. Charisma coupled with his relatable advocacy might just be his most dangerous weapon in his battle against his nemesis.
On the other side of the spectrum, it looks like BvS will also feature those who’ve become dedicated to Superman. Previously, in the teaser trailer, lines like “looking for a savior” have been thrown. Whether this image is that of the Mexican Day of the Dead or a cult around Superman, both seem possible. This fully embraces the religious metaphors of Superman being a Messiah-like figure.
From what we know, It looks like Batman vs Superman will be more than just a straight up action-packed superhero movie. The tidbits provided have shown political undertones dealing with ideas such as xenophobia, the power of media and public opinion, and possibly even some politicking and shades of fascism. Lots of heavy stuff.
That or I’m just giving this guy too much credit.
Here’s the synopsis:
“Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.”
Lol, I flipped on “that’s it, feel my biceps.”
