Leonardo DiCaprio in Alejandro Iñárritu’s hard-hitting ‘The Revenant’ trailer

The Revenant—not to be confused with Kerry Prior’s 2009 horror/dark comedy—is the latest from Birdman-director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film is centered on the life of Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he charges for survival through the 19th century American wilderness.

If Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell are regrouping onto a generation-leaping southern drama with Joy, DiCaprio and Inarritu is looking to work it up just as hard: The Revenant will find DiCaprio’s character faced against a friend who betrayed him and left him in the woods to die. (The friend in question is portrayed by Tom Hardy, in case you’re still unexcited.) Domhnall Gleeson—who seems to appear in every major film coming out at present; no mystery there, he’s terrific in Ex Machina—adds to a fine cast alongside Will Poulter and Paul Anderson.

The teaser-trailer is light on dialogue and heavy on, well, heavy-breathing. As it is, it looks promising already, boasting fine photography-work by Emmanuel Lubezki who shot the film entirely in natural light.

In the trailer we hear Leo say he’s not afraid to die, he’s done it already. Whether he’s referring to the numerous times numerous hearts have sunk during Oscars, or just something else entirely, well, we know the struggle. Take a look:
