Inspired by PH true crime story “Kisapmata” gets the restored treatment, premieres online this Dec. 19

KISAPMATA was inspired by the true crime report “The House on Zapote Street”.

“In The Wink of An Eye” as it would also be known as has been a staple favorite among budding cinephiles in the country. Considered as a classic of epic proportions not only because of the controversy of the story by which the film is inspired from, but because it was made by the revered filmmaker, the elusive Mike de Leon. Not only that, the film in itself is a classic film that boasts of metaphors from Vic Silayan’s portrayal of the boisterous macho chauvinistic father who ends up killing this entire family, down to the minute details of the production design that support the father’s gripping overpowering nature.

Read one of our favorite reviews of the Kisapmata, as written by our friend of the pod and film critic Oggs Cruz here.

Written for the screen by Clodualdo del Mundo, based on Quijano de Manila/Nick de Ocampo’s non-fiction true crime writings called “The House on Zapote Street”.

The film stars Charito Solis, Jay Ilagan, Charo Santos, Ruben Rustia and Vic Silayan—is a psychological drama about how Dadong, a domineering ex-police officer loses control when his daughter Mila and son-in-law Noel defy his rules and attempt to break free from the oppressive home.

‘Kisapmata’ is also known to be the first film to heavily discuss incest, which was a bold move for a film at the time. Other subjects covered were murder, suicide, and parricide.

The restored version will have its online premiere on December 19, 2020 (Saturday). Viewers worldwide can access and watch it from 7AM to 11PM (PH time) through Vimeo, as posted on the Casa Grande Vintage Filipino Cinema Facebook page.

Kisapmata was hailed by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino as one of the Best Films of the decade. The restoration was done at the L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy (which was also responsible for the restoration of classics like Maynila sa Kuko ng Liwanag, Batch ’81, and A Portrait of the Artist as a Filipino), and Wildsound Studios. Co-funded by UnionBank and Mike de Leon himself. The first theatrical release of the restoration was held in August at Il Cinema Ritrovato (Rediscovered Cinema) in Bologna, Italy.
