An aggressively bonkers espionage film, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, has breached into comic book territory by amplifying its level of outrageousness in this sequel. The main attraction remains to be its bombastic action designed for viewers with an attention span of a Boomerang app (the delirious cab chase at the start is only an indication of what’s about to ensue). Largely thanks to CGI and director Matthew Vaughn’s ambitious filmmaking, characters can easily punch, kick, dodge and backflip their way out of a sticky situation without ever worrying about the laws of physics. The accompanying slow-motion, camera pans and zoom-ins can be occasionally jarring but when it’s all done in the context of a marketing strategy (these featured suits will be available in the market!), it all makes sense. Oh, and of course, to tolerate all this madness, the film clocks in a hefty runtime of two and a half hours.
This sequel marks the introduction of The Statesman, Kingsman’s American counterpart disguised as a distillery in Kentucky with agents fittingly named: Tequila (Channing Tatum), Whiskey (Pedro Pascal), Ginger Ale (Halle Berry) and head honcho Champagne aka “Champ” (Jeff Bridges). Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and the very much alive Harry Hart (Colin Firth) — all from the first film — seek aid from them when they are suddenly attacked by demented cartel leader Poppy (Julianne Moore). A lot of crazy stuff goes around here but the most unnecessary and tasteless of all is the scene where a tracker is implanted in a lady via vaginal insertion (really, a vagina bug?). Things escalate and before we know it, we’re witnessing a fantastic voyage through the woman’s private parts.
In the first Kingsman, social commentary is injected via Valentine’s (Samuel L. Jackson) plan to address overpopulation and drastic climate change by having 90% of the humans slaughter one another. For The Golden Circle, the hyperbolic moral dilemma lies in the hands of the POTUS. Is it justifiable to sacrifice the lives of the drug-users in putting an end to the country’s war on drugs? Are they to be demonized entirely and to be treated as mere collateral damage to achieve “progress”? A lot of reactions have been said that this film is tailor-made for the Philippines’ status quo. It poses provocative questions in a world where nothing is black and white. But honestly, for an over-satirical film with little brains, it’s hard to take the message seriously. So much is going on that it loses the supposed tone and meat of the story.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle is very much self-aware but self-awareness is never a free pass to sloppy-land. While the whole cast is committed to their caricaturish roles and a surprise cameo from a music legend can be a delight, its reliance on ultra-violent humor and absurd plot-twists, makes it feel near pointless. Like a fireworks spectacle, so much is thrown at your face but very little of it sticks. (I am however inclined to eat a homemade burger and some jam to John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” after.)
When is enough, enough? We can only expect Kingsman to further inject more cocaine in its franchise from here on out.
NOTE: We published yesterday (10/12/17) this review with a score of 2/5. Shortly after, the author clarified that he gave it 2.5/5 (yes, the point 5 matters). We apologize for the editorial mistake.
