The Society of Filipino Archivists for Film (SOFIA) invites you to join its sixth Microlearning session with guest speaker, Ms. Jo Atienza who will discuss “The Many Beginnings of Film Archiving in the Philippines” happening this October 24, 2021, 3PM-5PM (PHT) via Zoom. This session’s moderator will be SOFIA’s very own Ronald Rios.

SOFIA’s Microlearning sessions began in September 2020 that marks the beginning of a new centennial for Philippine Cinema. The Philippines celebrates its 100th year of filmmaking in 2019, and yet film preservation was only practiced at the latter decade of its centennial.

How does one start archiving films?

Distinguished in the field of Filipino film archiving, Josephine Atienza served as one of the founders of SOFIA during its inception in 1993 and as the former Head of Film Division, Film Archives of the Philippines in 1984. She also pioneered the setup of ABS-CBN’s Film Archive in 1994 and as its consultant until 2005. She also served two terms as archiving representative to the Cinema Committee of NCCA as Secretary and then as Vice President starting in 1998. Her participation in the FIAF (International Federation of Film Archives) Summer School in Berlin, German Democratic Republic (1994), and ASEAN Seminar/Workshop on Film Archive Management in Canberra, Australia (1995) has also strengthened her knowledge in film archiving.

One to practice her extensive knowledge in film, she had also worked in various television and film productions under Regal Films and Star Cinema back in the 80s and 90s. Currently she works as part of Walt Disney’s streaming service, overseeing and managing the database for the Global Content operations of Disney +.

The session’s moderator, Ronald Rios, is no stranger to frequent SOFIA attendees and microsessionistas. He is the Board Secretary of the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film and is a civil servant, working for the Office of the Ombudsman. His interests in film at the age of 7 has led him to a number of projects in Philippine Cinema, such as Project Coordinator of SALAMAT SA ALAALA directed by Dik Trofeo, a documentary of the National Artist for Film Gerry de Leon, and video contributor in the documentary ALIPATO: KA LUIS TARUC also directed by Dik Trofeo among many other contributions.

SOFIA’s Microlearning Series sessions aim to provide more knowledge on AV archiving and film preservation directly from experts themselves. This advocacy hopefully encourages the youth and film enthusiasts to care for and gain more interest in audio visual archiving and cultural heritage preservation in general.
