What does being an influencer look and feel like?
Being an influencer as defined in the Meriam-Webster dictionary as a person who exerts influence, a person who inspires or guides the actions of others.
As the world succumbs to the global epidemic called Coronavirus, influencers no longer adhere to the confluence of support by brands, as most brands these days are managing to survive the effects of this pandemic too, and instead have to yield more effort into rebranding themselves, now that they’ve got more time in their hands at home to experiment and truly understand which markets and what markets to (sic)expose themselves to.
Thus, three southeast Asian filmmakers are tasked to gather and to document the day to day lives of these influencers, to understand what it feels like and what it looks like to redefine that term — influencer — once again, to completely adapt to the challenge of these ever-changing times.
Eileen Chong from Singapore, Ratrikala Bhre Aditya of Tanakhir Films Indonesia, and Don Senoc of Film Producers Society (FPS) Philippines are launching a 90-day social documentary series entitled I AM SOCIAL, which will examine living in the age of social connectivity from three of the biggest digital hubs in the Southeast Asian region.
This open call for application offers a simple requirement: voices who are passionate in building their personal brands from diverse interests and backgrounds.

Even if you are a professional influencer who is already famous, or a rising one who wish to engage more audience in your personal site, we want to invite you to be part of a regional community of diverse voices” shares Don Senoc from the collective group Film Producers Society (FPS) that is behind the successful campaign for Kita-Kita, Patay na si Hesus (Jesus is Dead), BuyBust, and his short film Sa Among Agwat which won him the Best Director award in Cinemalaya 2019.
For Singaporean director and project co-creator Eileen Chong, she believes that the influencing market is making a huge splash in the entire Southeast Asia and there’s a need to explore the phenomenon of the influencer era —- to understand how influencers can culturally alter the way we live, eat, sleep, work, and have relationships.
“We examine the growing role of social media in the lives of consumers, methods of persuading young people, and it’s psychological effects of living in these times. What does it truly take to stand out in this highly zealous influencer era?”
Coming from different stand points, the three countries are looking forward to work together in this rare international co-production of digital cooperation.

Today, Southeast Asians are the most engaged mobile Internet users in the world with 360 million internet users, as shown in the e-Conomy SEA 2019 report. Of the 360 million internet users in Southeast Asia, accounting for ab out two-thirds of the region’s population, 90 percent of them access the internet via their mobile phones, the report said.
The digital sector is certainly booming and attracting a lot of interests in storytelling and creating virtual worlds as new realities. Such growth is expected to continue on a similar trend for more years to come.
Indonesia ranks highest when it came to social network penetration rate of attracting 199 million people per month in 2020. eMarketer projects this will rise to up to 212 million in 2021.
Indonesian producer Mandy Marahimin, whose film Islands of Faith has just been released on Netflix says, “The film [I AM SOCIAL] has a simple purpose: to show what it takes to climb the ladder of superstardom of becoming a top influencer by telling it through different lenses (Singapore, Indonesia, and the Philippines). We hope we can show how these experiences shape who we are as human beings and how we are all the same, despite our cultural differences.”
The Philippines ranks second, accounting for more than half of the total population at 73 million internet users regularly surfing social media networks. These numbers are still conservative considering the limited bandwith access of Filipinos around the archipelago.
For filmmaker Baby Ruth Villarama, whose documentary works like Sunday Beauty Queen, Little Azkals and Jazz in Love, immensley shaped documentary film appreciation shares “When I was offered to be part of this project through FPS, I thought it’s a good way to support voices who can keep us company while we figure out how to navigate the noisy digital space of the new world. I believe social influencing shouldn’t be just aspirational within glitz and posturing. It’s time we meet digital heroes who are more in tune with their feelings and experiences so we can better connect as humans.”
