A haunting, beautiful shot opens Hide Your Smiling Faces — a film about mortality and its ripples. A quiet rumination at loss, Hide Your Smiling Faces is heavier in mood than it is in narrative: In many instances we fear that Eric’s violent tendencies will lead to something dreadful. There is a distinct sense of dreariness and tenderness; of rottenness and ripeness. Events unfold at their natural pace which gives enough breathing room for Carbone’s rather indulgent poetics and lyricism.
