When you put Matthew McConaughey in a film about American freedom, he’s bound to be pretty much the film’s most valuable commodity. Lines like “Last time I checked, the gun don’t care who’s pullin’ the trigger” are almost always put on rain check until someone like him along. It’s less suave than a distinct air that he has that when he blurts out stuff like “There’s plenty left to fight for,” your body and mind suddenly goes in concert to agree.
That holds true for the recently released trailer for Gary Ross’ Free the State Of Jones, a film that has the vibe of an Oscar contender that just didn’t beat the deadline. The film sees McConaughey in the role of a confederate soldier who teams up with outlaws to do American stuff together, which simply means to spark a rebellion and fight for freedom. Yes, sort of like that teen dystopia movie with Shailene Woodley. That one is masquerading around as a movie about war when it’s about wayward teens of hipster consciousness fighting off conformism, which I guess is war just the same.
Speaking of teen dystopias, there’s less shaky camerawork here than one would expect from the director of the first The Hunger Games film, so go figure.

The film is based on the life of Newt Knight (McConaughey), a former soldier who rebels against the confederacy during the Civil War. Knight is married to a former slave (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), which while welcome in the respect that it opens itself up to mixed-race sensibility, the film simultaneously runs the risk of playing the white hero card. Which, come on, McConaughey? You know you’re in…right on.
