Four hours of bonus content to come in upcoming ‘Ang Nawawala’ DVD release

Four hours of bonus content to come in upcoming ‘Ang Nawawala’ DVD releaseDigital distribution in the Philippines is at a depressing point where home video is alarmingly scarce. Case in point: if you walk in a video store, you’d find six to seven racks of Hollywood titles and only one dedicated for local films. That rack, as you may have guessed, has gapped-teeth which is completely saddening. It is a sign that distributors are beginning to lose enthusiasm in releasing films in home video platforms. If you want to catch a film in the Philippines, you don’t drive to the video store or blast Netflix on, you patiently wait for film festivals to screen films, which can be a beautiful thing, too. But a healthy DVD collection provides the audience an experience distinct of watching films in festivals.

Part of this “experience” is the bonus content. I own a tower of DVDs and I doubt if any of them had bonus content. In turn, torrenters easily dismisses the idea of purchasing a copy of the film. If our distribution had exclusive content like, say, audio commentaries, I am confident people will support—especially enthusiasts who like to have a better understanding of the film in question, and film as a whole.

It is a lengthy introduction, but worth it.

I am excited to announce the DVD release of Marie Jamora’s acclaimed Cinemalaya entry Ang Nawawala (eng. title What Isn’t There). Jamora seems to understand that you cannot simply ask the general public to support your film and buy original DVD copies, you have to wager with them. “I know that our country is infamous for piracy and torrenting,” notes Jamora to Adobo Magazine. “That is why we have spent the last three months here in Los Angeles creating over four hours of bonus material on disc two, so that the people who support the film by buying the DVD will be rewarded with everything that they would normally not get online.”

  1. “I know that our country is infamous for piracy and torrenting,” notes Jamora to Adobo Magazine.
“That is why we have spent the last three months here in Los Angeles
creating over four hours of bonus material on disc two, so that the
people who support the film by buying the DVD will be rewarded with
everything that they would normally not get online.”

But the bonus material can be easily uploaded online. Whole discs can be copied, no? The absolute way to combat piracy and torrenting is to make good films. Make films that people would want to pay for. Why would I buy a DVD for its bonus content if I don’t find the film good? Crappy logic. The film is so bad, though. Filled with empty and spoiled characters.

  2. I doubt that torrent uploaders bother with bonus material. If they did, it is rare. Usually, it is just the film uploaded in torrent sites. I see that films like Ang Panggagahasa Kay Fe (eng. title The Rapture of Fe) and the restored version of Himala are ubiquitous in torrenting sites. They are great films, yet distributors only launched limited copies because turnout of sales is slow. DVDs of studio productions are received more commercially, even if some of them are not as good films. So where is the idea of whether the film is good or bad lie? I think it is the right marketing push that gives oomph, and yes, I stand by the fact that bonus material is a plus for DVD distribution.

  3. They sure do bother with Criterion bonus materials. And it’s a question of the facility of uploading things online. There are a lot of torrent uploaders out there and it only takes one to upload the entire contents of the dvds. And of course mainstream films probably have a high number of sales. Good or bad, they already have a market that thinks that they are good because of the kilig factor, their handsome actors, etc. Ang Nawawala, on the other hand, is a totally different film. It sells itself as serious and artistic so in order to sell well, it better be good. For serious moviegoers, of course buying the dvd is about the film as a whole; whether they liked or not. And sure bonus materials are a plus for DVD distribution but the ultimate factor is the film itself. The Ang Nawawala DVD with extra features is like a car with a tv, a fridge, and a phone in it but with a bad engine. No thanks.

  4. And this is purely drawn from your opinion, right? I feel we must put a disclaimer to that. And leave it to the supporters if they are buying the set or not. We are.

    Thanks for your inputs! 🙂
