At the heat of the Awards season, the first trailer for Tom Hooper’s transgender biopic The Danish Girl is released, seeping out generous reactions from the public. The film frames Eddie Redmayne, fresh from his Best Actor win for his role as Stephen Hawking in James Marsh’s The Theory of Everything, in a poignant tale of Lili Elbe, one of the first transgender women who underwent sexual reassignment procedures. Alicia Vikander portrays Lili’s wife, fellow artist Gerda Wegener, in her days pre-transition; Matthias Schoenaerts plays Lili’s childhood friend who gets involved with Gerda.
Despite early criticisms regarding casting (a few notes that a real transgender should have been cast), Hooper seems firm on his decision to go with Redmayne: “Eddie was really the person I wanted to make the film with, and I was very passionate about that,” he said to Screen Daily. “I was a great believer in him as an actor. I think also there’s a certain gender fluidity that I sensed in him, that I found intriguing and it led me to think he might be a really interesting person to cast in this role. I felt that there was something in him that was drawn to the feminine. That was something that I felt he might be interested to explore further.”
Say what you will about Redmayne; at least he knows how to choose roles.
The Danish Girl is set to have its global premiere at Venice film festival this Saturday, September 5th, and is slated for a US release November 27th. No word yet on a Philippine release date, but I’m expecting to see it playing not too long before or after the U.S. run.
