Pixar has been in a rut lately. What once was a studio known for consistency, a bulwark for not just good but great animation, has found itself floundering in recent years. Finding Dory, The Good Dinosaur, Monsters University, Cars 2 — you can say that things have been pretty hit and miss.
It looks though as Pixar will be trying something new this year. Taking a cue from its sister company Walt Disney Animation Studios (yes there is a difference, WDAS are the ones behind Moana, Frozen, and all the past “Disney Renaissance” films from Little Mermaid to Tarzan), Coco will be Pixar’s first full-on musical. This move — add that to Cars 3 looking super dark — seems to be part of the new push stated by Pixar president Jim Morris in a recent interview. As he mentioned, after Toy Story 4, Pixar will be moving back once again into original concepts and will start shying away from sequels. And of course, with originality comes innovation, mixing things up, and this seems to be just exactly what they’re eyeing starting with Coco.
Tackling deeper more profound themes under the veneer of a kid’s movie has something Pixar has been renowned for — from neglect, to loss, to aging and death. Pixar has seemingly perfected this to the point that its name has already been turned to an adjective in describing one’s take of a story — “The Pixar Effect” so to speak. It seems though that this time around, Pixar is willing to handle such a topic head-on as Coco will be taking place during Mexico’s famed Dia de los Muertos and from the looks of it, death, leaving people behind, will be at the core of this film.
