Cmd + X Kutcher, enter Fassbender: ‘Steve Jobs’ trailer

Biopics of Steve Jobs seem to be churning out as fast as new versions of the iPhone. Since his death in 2011, this is the second time the life and times of the tech visionary has gotten the cinematic treatment; the first of course being Ashton Kutcher’s critical and commercial flop, Jobs. Judging by the trailer, Steve Jobs just might have the auteur flare lacking from the first movie.

From the team of award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionnaire)  and equally-acclaimed screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network), with Michael Fassbender in the title role, the movie reportedly takes place real-time around three iconic Apple product launches in Steve’s life – all featuring the personal drama the tech innovator endured off-stage and behind closed doors.

Bringing their different strengths into play, the team behind this movie might just prove to be genius, on one hand you’ve got Danny Boyle’s signature fast edits and love for eyegasmic cinematography, on the other you have the tried and tested Sorkin-style of quick, rapidfire, sharp dialogue. It’s like the aural/visual version of peanut butter and jelly. Pair this with a solid cast obviously bringing their A-game onscreen, it’s not hard to see why this is a potential awards-season contender.

It’s quite interesting to see what Steve Jobs might offer, top of mind, the premise might not seem that compelling for a big screen feature. This is not a fast-paced corporate thriller, the criminal element behind most of Danny Boyle’s work is absent, nor is this even a tale of plagiarising a college start-up, but keep in mind that this story is from the same mind behind The Social Network and if his track record in writing genius jerks is to be considered, I’m optimistic that Steve Jobs will be equally fascinating.
