The premise reminds me of Gregg Araki’s 2004 film Mysterious Skin, which for me remains one of the most arresting coming-of-age tales in cinema. We’ll see about Closet Monster, though: the film looks wild, and the critic blurbs aren’t easing it at all when they say it’s a queer story written in a Cronenbergian headspace, which, if you think about it, is perfectly fitting to describe such a turbulent phase of one’s life. Nothing screams Cronenberg more than some fleeting years of adolescence.
Closet Monster also stars Aaron Abrams, Isabella Rossellini, Joanne Kelly, and Aliocha Schneider. It opens in the U.S. August 19th (on a limited release). The rest will have to wait for further announcements, re: V.O.D./home video release dates. Stay put.
