After more than a week of Philippine cinema celebration, the 2015 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival has finally come to an end. Capping of the festival was the awarding ceremony held last August 15 (Saturday) at the the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.
Different from its previous years, Cinemalaya’s annually sought contest opted to only screen short films this year’s competition. Melting the judges’ hearts to win “Best Film” was Martika Ramirez Escobar’s Pusong Bato – a peculiar love story between a 70s has-been and her heart-shaped rock (as in bato. hindi manhid, hindi foundation, hindi si Dwayne Johnson; as in bato).
Other winners include:
Best Direction: Lisyun Qng Geografia (Geography Lessons) by Petersen Vargas
Audience Choice: Sanctissima by Kenneth Dagatan
Best Screenplay: Papetir by Darwin Novicio
NETPAC Prize: Wawa by Anj Macalanda
Special Jury Prize: Wawa by Anj Macalanda
The winner of Best Film will receive P150,000 while the winner of the Audience Choice Award will get P25,000. The rest of the winners will get a Balanghai tropy.
Aside from announcing this year’s victors, Cinemalaya also rolled out the 10 finalists for next year’s return of the festival’s Feature-length category:
Ang Bagong Pamilya Ni Ponching by Inna Salazar and Victor Villanueva
Ang Mga Bisita ni Mamang by Janice O’Hara and Denise O’Hara
