Chappie

Chappie

chappie_xlgFor almost a century in cinema, man’s fear and fascination with automatons capable of human-like cognizance have been a subject of creativity and thought provoking ideas. From Metropolis (1927) to Pacific Rim (2013), these stories engrossed the audiences from engaging narratives, technical visual excellence or profound subtle elements that can be derived from a great science fiction film. Chappie, which is Neill Blomkamp’s newest flick in the theaters, is unfortunately not one of those.

Officially Blomkamp’s first misfire (definitely not Elysium), the film is about the near future when mechanized police robots are being used to combat crimes. One of the androids named Chappie was stolen and given a different programming. Due to the accidental and genius discovery of his creator, Chappie becomes the first sentient by-product of man’s inquisitiveness. As the story progresses, opposing forces see Chappie as a peril to the most dominant species existence and will do everything to put the fortuitous discovery to end.

Chappie simply suffered from random premises and inconsistent storyline. At first, the film tries to introduce a social commentary about the practice of coercive mechanism to fight violence through the use of advanced artificial intelligent machines. This did not take long, the narrative suddenly shifted literally to parenting when some irresponsible gangsters and Chappie’s intelligent maker try to feed him knowledge in disparate directions. The movie also tries to connect with the audiences through an emotional journey of discovering Chappie’s nature or the meaning of his self-emergence. None of these aspects are effective, though; from the annoying and humorless gangster jargon, lackluster and foolishly sentimental endeavor of the characters to build touching relationships, Blomkamp’s efforts are total failure.

It is also disquieting to think that none of the main characters are in the normal boundaries of sound behavior or at least likable. From the profit-hungry Sigourney Weaver; egocentric, war freak and underexposed Hugh Jackman; imprudent creator Dev Patel and Die Antwoord in the ostentatious roles as parents of Chappie, the movie never had a soul or heart at its core. The plot is very formulaic and the conclusion is never profound or adequate at all. The subject of consciousness is a multi-layered quality of every being and always has a window of great opportunity to be divulged in a great science fiction movie but in the case of Chappie, the theme was pushed to something far-fetched, repetitive and unnecessary. Nevertheless, the remarkable takeaway of the audiences in this film is the seamless and realistic details in the visual effects and sound.

Having it all said, Neill Blomkamp’s blend of social commentary, naturalistic CGI effects and provoking science fiction elements define his identity as a filmmaker, but his latest, Chappie, although visually alluring, is a reluctant and incoherent film that suffers from not deliberately knowing what it is trying to achieve as a story.
