The Philippines is on a roll in the Big Three! Coming on the heels of Hele sa Hiwahang Hapis‘ inclusion in Berlinale’s Main Competition, Cannes Film Festival president Pierre Lescure and artistic director Thierry Fremaux announced Thursday that Brillante Mendoza’s Ma’ Rosa will compete for the highly coveted Palme d’Or. This is the director’s third time to be in competition following Serbis and Kinatay, the latter of which earned him Best Director in 2009.
Brillante Mendoza’s Kinatay (2009)
The Main Competition lineup includes a number of previous Palme d’Or winners, including brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne, who have won this honor twice for Rosetta in 1999 and The Child in 2005, Ken Loach for The Wind That Shakes the Barley in 2006, and Cristian Mungiu for 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days in 2007. This is also not the first rodeo in this category for many of the other directors, including Pedro Almodovar, Olivier Assayas, Jim Jarmusch, Park Chan-wook, and Xavier Dolan, who served as part of the jury last year.
Woody Allen’s Cafe Society is set to open the festival, and three other US films will be screened out of competition. These are Steven Spielberg’s much anticipated The BFG, Jodie Foster’s George Clooney-starrer Money Monster, and Shane Black’s buddy comedy The Nice Guys. The 69th Cannes Film Festival will run from May 11 to 22, 2016. Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller will head this year’s jury.
Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart star in Woody Allen’s Cafe Society.
