For me and many 90’s kids, Goosebumps was our introduction to horror. The books, the show, that catchy intro; it and Are You Afraid of the Dark were our go-to fix of fright right before bedtime. It provided that kind of chill which was creepy at the same time delightful. It was juvenile horror – cheesy, yes, but it was a hella lot of fun… and that’s the least that I could hope for for the new Goosebumps movie.

Going the meta route, Jack Black plays a fictionalized version of R.L. Stine, the real-life author of Goosebumps. In the movie, a big city teenager named Zach (Dylan Minette) reluctantly moves to a new small town neighborhood. Things seem to go better when he meets the cute neighbor next door, Hannah (Odeya Rush). Soon things take a turn for the worse when he discovers that Hannah’s father is the reclusive Goosebumps author – who is somehow kept prisoner by the creatures he keeps locked up in their books. The monsters at some point escape, hilarity and hijinks ensue. As I said, Jumanji.

It is notable that the movie moves away from the original creepiness the books and TV series possessed (pun not intended). Instead of going for “kid” scary, it seems that tone fits more into “kid” comedy. This movie could have been a good opportunity to create an original story which evoked the family-friendly horror the original series was popular for. The classic horror approach would have been a breath of fresh air amongst the found-footage, the torture porn, and the dark and edgy horror of this generation. Will the tonal shift the writers chose necessarily work? Only time will tell.
