American Sniper, Blackhat, M open this week in Philippine theaters

This week finds the release of American Sniper and Blackhat—two films I have already watched during the Awards, a.k.a. screener season. The former is a Clint Eastwood film perfectly fitting the Oscar mold; the latter being Michael Mann‘s under-sung work, which some imagine if titled “American Hacker” would have had ‘better chances’ in the awards circuits. I have already seen Zig Dulay‘s M (Mother’s Maiden Name) as well, which played as a competing film in the New Wave category of Metro Manila Film Festival. You can read Gab’s review here.

Mortdecai is the latest Johnny Depp-starrer, directed by David Koepp (Premium Rush). It is a tongue-in-cheek espionage film that, if IMDB is to be trusted for its accuracy, “juggles” “angry Russians.” Juggling any foreign land to comic effect hasn’t always met great ends (see: The Interview) but I don’t say it can’t be fun (see: not The Interview). Meanwhile, the David Radcliffe-less sequel The Woman in Black: Angel of Death, interestingly, is set in World War II, a time when the famously haunted Eel Marsh House serves as recluse for London children who are evacuated from warfare.

Annie is also seeing release this week. Directed by Will Gluck (of Easy A fame), the adaptation-of-the-adaptation of the Thomas Meehan stage play locks in a post-modern twist: racial “un-bias,” ‘so jokes Twitter. There’s also the animation feature titled Boonie Bears, to the Rescue! following brother bears who “become super dads to take care of a mysterious little girl.” Should be fun. And finally, there’s #Ewankosau saranghaeyo, a film by Roman S. Perez Jr. that looks to forward the rave of native tween romances, this time casting a high schooler who takes the interest of a K-POP obsessed girl.

The following films open today, January 21st, in Philippine theaters:

  • American Sniper
  • Annie
  • Blackhat
  • Boonie Bears, to the Rescue!
  • #Ewankosau saranghaeyo
  • M (Mother’s Maiden Name)
  • The Woman in Black: Angel of Death
