Not that the prior eyed actor actually “looked” the part–that would be Margot Robbie (of Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wallstreet fame, had already said yes to comic-to-film adaptation of Suicide Squad)–it can be said that fans of the 1995 animé feature Ghost in the Shell are still somewhat sour with the casting decisions of the upcoming adaptation. I, for one, think this is only inexorable; at least for someone who has played all-encompassing entities from an innocuous OS to a lethal super-human. Casting as a cybernetic host to essentially the world’s doom is just bound to happen. I am talking about Scarlett Johansson (Her; Lucy), whose all-American aura seems to become an issue amongst fans. Johansson is an able actor and carrying a project as this is by least imaginable (Deadline reports that she has been offered $10 million by Dreamworks–upfront). Regardless what are people’s opinion, it cannot be ignored that Johansson headlining the animé-to-film adaptation could just work. Yet, I say that all of us are damned for what you are going to read in the next paragraph. Again, I say that it could work but now there is an unmistakable tremble in my voice. Brace yourself, Dorothy, for you will be whirled back to Kansas!
Ghost in the Shell is directed by Rupert Sanders (of Snow White and the Huntsman) with a script penned by William Wheeler (The Hoax). The film is planned to be shot in 3-D.
I mean, we will watch anything with the lady in it but we prefer if it had existential ambiguities and Moon Song-crooning. Here’s to hoping something good comes out of this. What do you guys think?
