Dungeons and Dragons is one of those OG role-playing games that have been referenced time and again in popular culture. The tabletop game dominated 70s and 80s kids, inspiring wargames to flourish from having one-dimensional characters to creating a world employing the same strategies as wargames but with well-developed characters with backstories that aid the players to strategize their games better. This world-building effect definitely makes D&D a great game to be adapted on the big screen.
Still, game adaptations don’t necessarily commit to what the fans expect them to. And so the first trilogy of the game in 2000 wasn’t critically successful. Which is why it comes as a boldly surprise that a reboot is out soon. Imagine the pressure of surpassing the fans of the game? Why not leave it to the imagination of its players instead?
Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley directs Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The trailer reveals a sort of humor among thieves. But these are thieves who serve the wrong master. When they realize that these masters, “The Red Wizards” created an army of the undead who else is required to stop them but these thieves themselves?
Will the star powers of Michelle Rodriguez, Chris Pine, Netflix’s Bridgerton star Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head and Hugh Grant finally give this video game adaptation some justice on the big screen? Looking at the trailer below, it employs some nerdy geek humor that only Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks star himself) can probably pull off.
Perhaps the most definitive of expectations is, will the franchise finally have its footing in the new decade? Let’s find out this March 29.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is distributed in the Philippines by Paramount Pictures through Columbia Pictures. Check out the trailer below.
