‘Cleaners’ wins Top Prize in QCinema 2019, and more from the festival

In what many audiences deem as one of the best QCinema edition by far, Cleaners is undoubtedly one of the best films to come out of the main competition, and one of the best debut films of newcomer filmmaker Glenn Barit, with his innovative technique of photocopied stills which are then manually colored in highlighter pens and then animated, is just an added bonus to a nostalgic coming-of-age story about highschool students based in Tuguegarao from 2007-2008. It is honest, sincere, and every effort all worth watching on the big screen.

Apart from winning Best Film – Asian Next Wave category, Barit and his team also brings home two major awards: Best Screenplay and Audience Choice Award – Asian Next Wave.

Two other new directors bagged major awards.  Chinese Qui Sheng won the NETPAC Jury Prize for Suburban Birds and Rae Red brought home the Best Director award for her first solo-directorial work, Babae at Baril. The film, Babae at Baril, also won the Gender Sensitivity Award.

Janine Gutierrez wins her first international award for Best Actress as ‘Babae’ in Red’s award-winning film while non-actor Por Silatsa wins Best Actor for the laotian film ‘The Long Walk’.

Lee Chatametikool of the Thai and German film Nakorn-Sawan was recognized for his artistic contribution in film editing.  It is the first time QCinema pitted its local grantees against Asian directors in this competition section, Asian Next Wave (ANW) Competition. It put in ANW’s wing the former cluster — Circle Competition, which was for the Filipino filmmakers.

For their win, Team Cleaners brings home the top prize worth 6,000USD (307,500 PHP as of Oct. 19, 2019). In the Shorts-side through QCShorts, Che Tagyamon wins the Best Film for ‘Judy Free’, a story of a young girl whose reality is disrupted when her Overseas Filipino Worker father brings home an animated doodle figure.

The Special Jury Prize was awarded to Bontoc-based filmmaker, Carla Pulido Ocampo for her film, Tokwifi. The comedy short Excuse Me Miss Miss Miss by Sonny Calvento garnered the audience choice award for shorts.

This year’s batch of filmmakers are brought upon by this year’s theme, Rising Wave which honors debuting filmmakers and female filmmakers across Asia.

For the Asian Next Wave winners, headed by Ricky Lee, the talented set of jurors have brought upon their wit to decide this year’s winners, which includes Richard Bolisay, Toshiyuki Hasegawa, Phan Dang Di, and Claire Marty. For the QCShorts, headed by Sari Dalena she is joined by other talented jurors Jun Sabayton and Benjamin Tolentino.
