Adam Wingard’s ‘The Woods’ is actually a secret ‘Blair Witch’ project

It was right under our noses, but as it trails a widely beloved territory, will the new Adam Wingard film be out of the woods or did it just walk into a wildly treacherous one?

Not much in the way of story has been made available for the new Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett collaboration The Woodswhich, for any film outfit is unimaginably stressful going in so close to the film’s release (September 16th). A teaser-trailer has already been released back in May, which vaguely touched on the possibility of a sinister force out to tormet a backpacking group of twentysomethings. Beyond that, we didn’t know a lot about The Woods. That is until Wingard and Barrett dropped the bomb on Entertainment Weekly, announcing a title change (the project, punnily, is now called Blair Witch), and detailing how they kept the Blair Witch Project reboot a secret.

SDCC 2016: 'Blair Witch' sequel 'The Woods' opens SeptemberThe Woods was our working title,” says Wingard. “When we signed on to it, we knew that [the name] was eventually going to be changed. To us, it wasn’t even going to be part of the marketing. But I think Lionsgate made a really smart decision, using that.”

Which is agreeable, if you ask anyone familiar with the hustle that the 1999 original did, which was, essentially make the film seem like a real-life documentary. Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s The Blair Witch Project was the Pokémon Go of found-footage horror—everyone was buying into it. A direct sequel to the modern classic, Blair Witch is expected to do something bold with the marketing, which is this. It pulled a 10 Cloverfield Lane on us fans with only tightly ample time to freak out and (maybe, just maybe?) decompress.

Details about the plot are still kept air-tight, but we do know that Blair Witch will pick up from Heather’s brother (James Allen McCune) out to search for his missing sister. This sounds like a complete discarding of the generally despised first sequel The Blair Witch Project: Book of Shadows—a riddance that’s savage but necessary. Quick aside, though: there’s an Italian spinoff released in 2012 called Doc. 33, which mentions the events in Black Hills in Wyoming and that a similar incident had occurred somewhere in Austria. It’s a fine translation, if anything, and in my opinion, is worth a look.

Details about the cast, however, are in: Valorie Curry (“The Following”), Callie Hernandez (“From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series”), Brandon Scott (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Wes Robinson (“American Dreams”), and Corbin Reid (“Words With Girls”) complete the film’s cast.

While all this is well and good, new weight is pressed on the Wingard-Barrett duo which mostly concerns the rabid fans of the phenomenon. Remember how they made the 1999 original play a huge part of the dot-com business bubble? Will they deliver a la You’re Next (2011) and The Guest (2014)? What do you think? Let’s discuss in the comments section!
