Electrifying, exhilarating and astounding – Whiplash is probably one of the best psycho-thriller films of this decade, where director Damien Chazelle demonstrates his clear grasp of how film can be defined by music. La La Land, his follow-up to this Oscar darling, is set in contemporary Hollywood, but what this trailer shows are like dreamy sequences taken straight out of the Golden Age of Cinema. The movie stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who have previously starred together in Crazy, Stupid, Love and Gangster Squad. Their onscreen chemistry in undeniable. Like we needed to remind you. They respectively play jazz pianist Sebastian and aspiring actress Mia, a pair of dreamers trying to balance the scales of art and love in the City of Angels. Uh oh. Musical + star-crossed lovers + Los Angeles (a.k.a. the City of Crushed Dreams). Let’s just hope this movie will end well.
The dialogue-free clip rings of old-fashioned, earnest romanticism that is lacking in mainstream rom-com these days. Plus, the colors and the lighting are reminiscent of Moulin Rouge!
