The lovable panda, Po Ping (voiced by Jack Black) comes back to the big screen as the Dragon Warrior in the third installment of Dreamworks’ well-loved franchise. As in any franchise, it has been primed that in its succeeding sequels the stakes must be higher, especially in displaying the heroics of this film’s diverse lineup of stars. Kung Fu Panda 3 safely reimagines the narrative template of its first movie, but is outweighed by bringing in funnier gags, retaining its heart, and delivering punch-after-punch of some of the most visually stunning pieces of 3-D animation to date.
Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and Alessandro Carloni, the film continues Po’s journey towards knowing his true self, going back to Kung Fu Panda 2’s cliffhanger, where it is revealed that Po’s father (Bryan Cranston) is still alive. Po has been promoted by Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) as the team’s new trainer, as Shifu retreats in reclusion to harness the elusive power of chi, the energy that flows from one living thing to another. Meanwhile, a demon water buffalo named Kai (JK Simmons) breaks free from the spirit world, as he steals the chi of all the kung fu masters, and subsequently turns them into becoming an army of jade warriors subject to his bidding. Kai is now on the search for Po, the prophesied one to defeat him. Po is confused more than ever, as his father brings him back to his family, while trying to figure out whether he really is the purported Dragon Warrior after all.
