Quentin Tarantino sued for allegedly stealing ‘Django Unchained’ plot

When you’re not Sam Raimi (director of Evil Dead II, one of the best American horror films of all time), violence in your films are easily misconstrued as your favoring politics for it. The ol’ QT has been suspect to these accusations, most recently being indicted a “cop-hater” and having the whole New York department boycott his film.

Losses are on the NYPD, I guess. Django Unchained is a terrific new-western.

With Quentin Tarantino out again in the spotlight promoting his much-anticipated feature The Hateful Eight, the hate—wink!—comes a-rushin’.

Apparently he’s now [inlinetweet prefix=”Quentin Tatantino is ” tweeter=”@FilmPoliceRevs” suffix=”#DjangoUnchained”]being sued by screenwriters Oscar Colvin, Jr. and Torrrance J. Colvin[/inlinetweet] who claim he had ripped off from their 2004 screenplay titled Freeman—reports coming from The Wrap and Variety. “There are a plethora of similarities between ‘Freedom’ and ‘Django Unchained,’” the suit asserts. “Defendants would call them coincidences, however, the intentional use of our work is neither an accident nor coincidence.

“Defendant Tarantino claims to have based his screenplay on Sergio Corbucci’s ‘Django,’ but the truth is that there are far more similarities between ‘Freedom’ and ‘Django Unchained’ than between ‘Django’ and ‘Django Unchained.’”

A plot point in which Django (played by Jamie Foxx) tries to retrieve his wife (Kerry Washington) from her sadist owner (Leonardo DiCaprio), the two screenwriters claim, are taken from their own screenplay. “Returning to the hellish realm of the South to purchase the freedom of his loved one(s) with the assistance of a Caucasian in the South is the uniquely original beat that links ‘Django Unchained’ to ‘Freedom.’”

The lawsuit demands for a compensatory fine that amounts to “hundreds of millions of dollars”. No word yet on either side, but this lawsuit sounds cliched as Anomalisa is original. It’s not impossible that the Colvins and Tarantino conceived their drafts separately.

That said, I’m interested to see if this develops into a full-blown court case, which I think The Weinstein Co. won’t allow, especially this early into The Hateful Eight release. Truth or lie, the Colvins’ allegations is going to turn into some serious dough I imagine.
