There is but a single thread stringing together the story of Talk Back and You’re Dead, thus far the latest amongst the Wattpad-imports currently most ubiquitous in Philippine theatres. The film, essentially a tween girl’s romantic reverie strung nervily after another, incidentally resonates how random teenage romances tend to become. But then they say love is love – they, being the legions of screaming fans – and so: fuck us all lesser thinkers, who only seek structure and reason within a story.
“Fire all the writers,” gathers, in paraphrase, the critic Zig Marasigan. Amen, brother.
Yet, if it makes for valid argument, the film maintains watchability, the two hours almost winding past the audience and leaving a disquieting sense of either curiosity or confusion. And this is again owed primarily to the palpable chemistry between the leads Nadine Lustre and James Reid. Succeeding their team-up in the widely successful Diary ng Panget, Lustre and Reid is once again being centred in a scatterbrain tale of young love, with nothing else to really latch on besides their inherently infectious connection.
The film begins with a childhood vow and from there propels to an arc that deals with someone having an amnesia and then to another on being committed to a fixed marriage – it gets pretty exhaustive, especially for someone, just do imagine, who have not read the book from which the film is based on, like myself. On paper, it is quite literally a huge wobble of story ideas the writer seems to expect to cohere by themselves.

At least with Cathy Garcia-Molina’s admission-worthy She’s Dating a Gangster we are given an empathetic (if not at all unfamiliar) depiction of first romances, latching on an actually moving story. On the other hand, what director Andoy Ranay arrives with Talk Back and You’re Dead is a film that is completely unconcerned with narrative structure and form, which right ‘till now is up for debate if whether liberating or a sketchy cheat.
It is on frequent occasions supremely head-scratching – only this much can be told for certain.
Towards the credits, there is a scene: a final wink, if you may, before the curtains are drawn; its use, for all the wrong reasons, is cringingly Marvel-esque.
Andoy Ranay should stay as an actor.
Straight up! I have not yet watched the film but I’ve heard lots of people saying it was crap. The movie’s pacing is so confusing only the ones who read the book could understand wtheck is actually going on.
There is something wrong with the movie… I know. Maybe the bad ensemble cast’s acting or the eyebrow raising story line or my confusion on how a minor can be convicted and jailed for kidnapping. Still, I can’t put my finger on it. So I just accepted the fact na maybe (maybe I’m wrong because I’m no expert), the way how TBYD was executed, yun yung “new” kind of style when it comes to storytelling coherence, cinematography and editing… Yung tipong, “Go with the flow lang… wala naman tayong sinusundang plot or kinukuhang goal dito.”, something like that. Hindi ko rin naman kasi nabasa yung book.
Pero sa totoo lang, since nabasa ko yung wattpad days ng Diary ng Panget, it took a special part in my heart and I thought TBYD is a little too overwhelming for me.
I will go on a limb here and hazard a thought on the next sentence. I think we can all agree — as all will when I say Justin Bieber is a self righteous, egging imbecile — that ‘overwhelming’ only covers so much of Talk Back and You’re Dead. And not exactly the bracing type of ‘overwhelming,’ so.
Thank you for the input. 😉
haiss there are some scene in the TRAILER that weren’t in the movie itself?!! damn what’s the purpose of the trailer of the movie if the editor would just cut scenes that are also important to the story ugh! >.< it's a good that i've read the book if not i will be confused during the movie.. while watching the movie everything felt like the pacing of the story was going fast. the character of TOP was not that emphasize "the soft side of TOP" and the scene in the beach house it was too short for me they did not emphasize how much more their relationship got more deeper, serious and bonding moments 🙁 no offence but how did the author tolerate that? 🙁 maybe i just expected too much from the scrip writer 🙁 (sorry for those who have not watch it yet i may have been a spoiler alert) but still no doubt that james reid did a good job on his acting.
Yung film script kasi ng She’s Dating a Gangster, na-workshop kahit papano. Si Jun Cruz Reyes pa nga raw ang nag-workshop nung script kaya medyo tumino.
Ung mga hindi nakita sa trailer nasa NTBG, which is ung part 2 nung movie.
