The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released the shortlist of films that advances in the Best Foreign Language Film category of The 88th Oscars. • Embrace of the Serpent (Ciro Guerra, Colombia)
  • The Fencer (Klaus Härö, Finland)
  • Labyrinth of Lies (Giulio Ricciarelli, Germany)

Naji Abu Nowar’s ‘Theeb’ (2015)

László NemesSon of Saul is widely considered a front-runner in this race since winning the Grand Jury Prize in Cannes and is even poised by pundits to receive a Best Picture nomination. Nemes is a first-time director along with Giulio Ricciarelli and Naji Abu Nowar, whose Theeb is only the second film to be ever submitted from Jordan. Meanwhile, out of four submissions, it is Ireland’s first time to make it into the shortlist with Paddy Breathnach’s Viva.

Joining them are directors Jaco Van Dormael and Ciro Guerra, who are both third-time representatives of their respective countries but are first-timers in the list. Van Dormael’s The Brand New Testament is a Golden Globe nominee, as well as Son of Saul, Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s Mustang, and Klaus Härö’s The Fencer. Completing the shortlist is A War by Tobias Lindholm, who has some familiarity with this category as he co-wrote the previous nominee The Hunt with Thomas Vinterberg.

‘A Pigeon Sat on a Branch and Reflected on its Existence’ didn’t make it to AMPAS’ list.

Considering that 80 films competed for the nine slots, a number of high-profile and critically acclaimed submissions were left out. Some of the most notable exclusions are Austria’s Goodnight Mommy, Iceland’s Rams, Portugal’s Arabian Nights: Vol. 2 – The Desolate One, Sweden’s A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence, and Taiwan’s The Assassin.

The shortlist is voted on through two stages. First, a committee consisting of LA-based Academy members selects the initial six choices. Then, the Academy’s foreign-language executive committee adds another three selections that they feel are under-recognized. The shortlist will be further trimmed down to the final five nominees, which will be announced on January 14, 2016. The 88th Oscars will be held on February 28, 2016.
