A female gunslinger is reborn in ‘Jane Got A Gun’ trailer

WATCH: Gun-toting Natalie Potman in 'Jane Got a Gun' trailerThe concept isn’t new, but hey, it’s Natalie Portman astride a horse and with a gun in a skirt—and this time it isn’t a space opera. There’s a lot going on in her latest project that doesn’t involve her having imaginary wings or clawing herself out in front of a mirror (okay, okay I’ll stop).

For whatever reason, Jane Got a Gun, almost didn’t get made. Its original distributor, Relativity Media, left it in the dark, pushing it further from a September 2015 to a January 2016 release. We Need to Talk About Kevin director Lynne Ramsay started directing the project two years ago then dropping it out for who knows how far along into the film. Jude Law and Bradley Cooper were both signed to do its male leads before moving on to their respective next projects.

Portman, who produces and stars as Jane, a wife and concerned citizen who along with her husband (played by Noah Emmerich) regains themselves from the bitter tragedy that is the Bishops Boys Gang. The gang in question is led by charismatic Colin McCann (played by Ewan McGregor).

Side note: McGregor’s baby face and nerdy-like gestures always gives me the chills whenever he plays the bad guy so this is surely something to look forward to.

Accepting the role of co-scriptwriter and Jane’s ex-lover is Joel Edgerton whose writing amused audiences and critics alike this year (read our review of Edgerton’s The Gift). He plays the role of Dan Frost, Jane’s previous beau to whom she turns when things get sour between the gang and her husband.

The trailer, which you can watch by hitting the play button at the top of this post, doesn’t change much of my perception of the western, except that it isn’t spaghetti enough. But who knows, right?

The film, directed by Gavin O’Connor, is slated for a January U.S. release, and not much later a Philippine release.

And no, Django Unchained is no excuse for a western-revival.
