We’ve only just hit the third month of this year and yet the slate of films that came out in the first quarter had us elated. From local releases such as Alone/Together, Born Beautiful, Elise among others to Hollywood blockbusters like Captain Marvel and Alita: Battle Angel have made great returns in the box office thus far, as well as rave reviews from the critics and audiences alike.
Below are 9 films to look forward to for the rest of 2019:
Us (Jordan Peele, March 22, 2019)
Fresh from SXSW 2019, Peele’s second effort as writer-director had moviegoers shaken to their core as they witnessed another relentless, terrifying and visceral horror flick. The imagery shown even on the film’s first trailer was more than enough to have us sign on to see this on the big screen. It stars Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke and opens next week!
The Beach Bum (Harmony Korine, March 29, 2019)
This follow-up to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers stars Matthew McCounaughey, Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Snoop Dogg, Jonah Hill and Martin Lawrence. McConaughey is perfect as Moondog, a Florida man who everyone claims as “the life of any party”. In the movie, we are taken into a sun-baked, ridiculous adventure as he meets some oddball characters who either help him or cause him more trouble.
The Lion King (Jon Favreau, July 19, 2019)
While Disney did not describe this as a live-action version of the 1994 animated film, we’re sure that this will be another home run in the box-office. An impressive roster featuring the voices of Donald Glover, Alfre Woodard, Beyonce, and Chiwetel Ejiofor among others, we can’t wait to cry our hearts out when “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” plays again.
Where’d You Go Bernadette? (Richard Linklater, August 9, 2019)
Initially slated for a March release, this mystery comedy stars Cate Blanchett, Kristen Wiig, and Billy Crudup aka some of the finest working versatile actors in Hollywood. It tells the story the architect Bernadette Fox who goes missing right before to a family outing. It is told through her 15-year old daughter, who will stop at nothing to find her mother.
Little Women (Greta Gerwig, December 25, 2019)

This film gets the absolute A-list treatment by having Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh and Emma Stone as part of the cast. A retelling of the classic American novel by Louisa May Alcott. It will mark as a reunion for Gerwig, Chalamet and Ronan who all worked together in 2017’s Lady Bird. This will surely give us some much-needed warmth and love come the Holiday season! I am personally thrilled by this.
Motel Acacia (Bradley Liew, Release Date TBA)
“A young Filipino man is groomed by his tyrannical Caucasian Father to take over Motel Acacia, which is tasked with exterminating immigrants by the government”. If that plot doesn’t interest you as soon as you read it, we don’t know what will. JC Santos and Agot Isidro will round up a diverse cast from Thailand, Australia, United States and Malaysia.
The Last Fool Show (Eduardo Roy Jr., March 25)
One of our local picks that we’re looking forward to this year stars JM De Guzman and Arci Munoz. The Last Full Show tackles filmmaking, as an arthouse director is approached by a mainstream studio to direct romantic comedy. This is Roy’s first studio effort, following Cinemalaya hits such as Quick Change and Pamilya Ordinaryo.
The Truth (Hirokazu Kore-eda, Release Date TBA)
Following last year’s tearjerker, Shoplifters, the prolific auteur gets back to his chair and directs this family drama where Catherine Deneuve (yes, THE Catherine Deneuve) plays a French screen goddess, who despite her success has a difficult relationship with her daughter Lumir (Juliette Binoche). Amid their stormy reunion, Catherine is starring in a sci-fi movie where she plays a mother who never grows old. It’s about conflict and reconciliation between a mother and her daughter. We will bring our tissues.
Late Night (Nisha Ganatra, June 7, 2019)
Emma Thompson as a late night TV show host? Say no more! This instant word-of-mouth hit at the recently concluded Sundance Film Festival was actually co-written by Mindy Kaling. The plot is simple: a veteran talk show host hires a female writer (Kaling) to help her boost the said show. The chemistry between both actresses is one reason we should all see this smart, charming comedy with a lot to say about the workplace structure and cultural differences.
